Irony

Yes, I have decided to join the masses and finally do a post about the elections. Here's my fast, terse (well as terse as I could ever be) summary of observations/thoughts regarding this year's elections:

  • I think I must have been one of the few people who, up until and beyond the moment of McCain's concession, was researching DES encryption instead of fast-clicking the refresh button on an election results site.

  • I have never been in a location where so many people audibly started celebrating when the results of the election were finally announced. I wasn't following the news when it happened, but I knew instantaneously the outcome of the elections.

  • I now know *exactly* how many of my neighbors have firearms, and who had to settle for using leftover fireworks from 4th of July

  • Tonight I feel sorry for the following people: policemen, parents with easily disturbed babies, and anyone who has to get up and go to work tomorrow before noon.

  • I haven't been this excited about an election since John McCain first announced he was running for President in 2000 (sadly, my excitement went away when he decided not to run). The irony is, this time around I didn't plan on voting for him.

My congratulations to anyone who supported Obama, and my fondest hopes that he will continue his record of bipartisanship for those who didn't vote for him.

McCain's concession speech was an incredible reminder to me of why I ever wanted to vote for him in the first place -- a reasonable man who is intelligent and knows how to bridge the gap between differing opinions, just as I perceive Obama to be.

It was sad to me to see McCain cater so much toward the far right for the purposes of getting elected. It was an even bigger blow to my confidence in him when he picked his running mate.

Now that the politics are over for him, his true nature is once again coming out, and it makes me long for the days when the runner-up to the Presidential elections would become the Vice President. An Obama/McCain combination would have been a truly spectacular thing for this country indeed.

Too bad that kind of ticket would never happen in this country...
